Lyrics

Act 2 Tracks 18 - 23

18. How To Say The Words

[BOBBY]

You're the brightest morning star
Lighting my day
Thoughts of you, dreams of you, yearning to
Somehow say

"You're the one I want to spend
The rest of my life with'"
How to say the words?  How to say the words?

[I] wish that my heart were an open book,
For the pages of love are in gold'
Then this fire inside, could burn its way into your eyes
And somehow, you'd magically know, that,

You're my constant waking dream,
My prayer when I sleep'
Every day, every hour, every second
I breathe I
Think of you, longing to,
Just spill it out, but
How to say the words?  How to say the words?

If my whole life were an open road,
Then my journey begins with your heart!
How can I try to describe the hidden passion deep inside'
If I don't even know where to start?

You're as fresh as early spring
Melting the snow'
Would that I, could that I, if only I could
Show you

What I feel, what I mean,
How much I love you!
What do I, when do I, how do I say the words?

19. No Tomorrow

[TOM]
If it takes a lifetime to wait, I'll be waiting,
Just as long as I can wait with you!
We'll build a home out of patience, and carve our names on its tree,
And the whole world will know the love that lives in you and me'

If it takes a lifetime to find, we will find it'
That place in our dreams, we're hoping to find'
And we'll know when we get there that we're finally home together, and

No tomorrow, can take it away, or break it in pieces,
No tomorrow, will break you away, or take you away from me'

 [ANNE MELTON]
If I could wake in your arms, every morning'
And gaze into your eyes when evening falls,
No tears will find me, as long as you're by my side,
And no fears will bind me on those cold and stormy nights'

[TOM & ANNE]
And we could build a family home, with room for an "auntie"'
Our house would be yours, anyplace, anytime!
We'll all be together, and we'll always be friends forever!!

[ANNE, TOM & PEARLINE]
No tomorrow, can take it away, or ever deny us'
No tomorrow, can break it away, or ever divide us'
No tomorrow, can take us away, or break us in pieces,
No tomorrow, can break us away, or take you away from me'

20. When Innocence Dies

[Townspeople]
Ooooh'.ooooooooh'.ooooooh'.

[MARY DULA]
All alone, broken and without a prayer,
Shattered and beyond repair,
In the empty quiet,
Hear the moans...whisper through silent trees,
Echoing the memories, in a bold defiance...

[MARY, MARTHA & TOWNSPEOPLE]
Life goes on, through the broken dreams,
For a moment, for an instant in time'
Love moves on, through the lonely streams'
Though the heart aches, and the soul yearns to fly
Though the heart aches'

[MARY]
--And the soul yearns to cry'when innocence dies.
All alone...facing the reality...the overwhelming misery...
Of the dreams now banished'
Tears of stone...locked away in emptiness,
Trickle down in hopelessness, for the hopes that vanished...

[MARY, MARTHA & TOWNSPEOPLE]
Life goes on, through the broken dreams,
For a moment, for an instant in time'
Love moves on, through the lonely streams'
Though the heart aches, and the soul yearns to fly
Though the heart aches, and the soul yearns to fly
Though the heart aches, and the soul yearns to cry

[MARY]
When innocence dies'
When innocence dies'
When innocence dies.

22. No Tomorrow

[TOM ]

Don't let this take our lifetime away, our life full of memories;
Don't give it the power to tear us apart...
Though the season divides us, though the harvest is due,
Let the meaning behind our love
be all you see when it's through,

Everyone has their own final hour, mine is present;
Don't let it be the last sight of me in your eyes!
Hold on to happy times,
Keep them always on your mind, where

No tomorrow, can take them away, or fade them from memory
No tomorrow, can break them away or take them away again.

Looking back on it all, what an adventure'
I lived life my way, I've lost and I've won'
Through it all you've been there for me,
Through it all you've kept your stride
Through it all you've been the rock of strength,
That kept our family alive,

No man could ever live more of life, than what I've been given;
I've loved and been loved, I've laughed and I've cried'
One day we'll meet again, in another place & time where

No tomorrow can take us away, or ever deprive us
No tomorrow can break us away, or ever divide us,
No tomorrow can change how it was, or fade it from memory
No tomorrow can chase us away, or take us away again'.

23. There Was A Man Reprise

MARTHA
There was a man. There was a man
And he was more than a man in a land where the truth can't be told'

[FEMALE]
There was a time, distant and gone,
When even the few who thought they knew were told they were wrong'

[TUCKER]
When a man's honor was at stake

[VANCE & TUCKER]
And those he knew could only hope and pray

 (VOICE JOIN THEM)
That justice would finally prevail, and truth can be found

[ALL]            There was a man' (There was a man)
There was a time '(There was a time)
There was a land 'and there was our town.

[SARGE]       There was a man

(W)              (He was a man of strength and character)

[UNION SOLDIER]]              A murdering fool

(W)                                 (He was a man of courage & honor)

[SARGE]        He was a coward who'd shoot in the back with a heart
                   cold and cruel'

(W)              (He was decent & kind!)

[SHARKER]              Now THERE was a man..

[SARGE}                 (The bastard stabbed that pretty little girl)

[SHARKER]              Noble and strong

[UNION SOLDIER]     (He stood and watched her suffer)

EXECUTIONER       (His innocence still haunts me)

[WOMAN]                We raised our kids to learn the golden rule

[MAN]                    By not returning evil done to you

[BOTH]                   Side by side we watched destruction change

                            Our lives all around'

[ALL]                     There was a man  (there was a man)
There was a time (there was a time)
There was a land, and there was a town.

[MEN]                    Someday in the future we will learn

[WOMEN]                That fightin's easy but it's not always the answer

[MEN]                    Men are men, but war is war

 I don't believe they even
care to ask the questions!

I don't believe they're even after the truth!
They're only interested in flaunting their aggression!
